Heavy Reading and Comptel Call for Telcos to Transform Their Service Lifecycle Management Approach to Successfully Participate in the Digital Economy

New Research Outlines How Operators Can Realise the Full Business Benefits of NFV, Reaching the Digital Service Agility and Customer Experience Levels of Webscale Competitors

HELSINKI, Finland—22 February 2016—Comptel Corporation (OMX Helsinki: CTL1V) and Heavy Reading today published research recommending that telcos rethink their approach to managing digital services and their lifecycles for competitive survival and to exploit new business opportunities in the digital economy.

“Webscale companies are setting benchmarks for the rapid, on-demand and personalised nature of digital service delivery. Every industry, especially telco, must now acquire the ability to replicate and improve on the digital service experience available, so they stay in step with the latest market requirements,” said Caroline Chappell, Practice Leader, Cloud & NFV, Heavy Reading.

“To get there, operators are first virtualising their networks, so network functionality is expressed as software applications – digital services – that can be programmatically composed and managed,” continued Chappell. “They also need to transform service lifecycle management from a business level down, so once conceived, digital services can be rapidly and cost-effectively defined, packaged for consumption, fulfilled and assured over their lifetime.”

This calls for a new layer of support within a telco’s operational stack – one that connects the cloud and physical resources (e.g. compute, storage, network) with business management processes and systems (e.g. customer care, billing, order management). The research recommends a three-tier approach to capitalise on digital service lifecycle management and scopes the functionality needed for accelerating digital service creation and delivery.

“Central to a digital service management layer are the ability to abstract service definition away from service implementation, enabling faster, flexible service delivery, and digital service composability, regardless of service provenance,” said Antti Koskela, Executive Vice President, Service Orchestration, Comptel. “These capabilities support a DevOps, automation-first approach and give telcos the Webscale levels of agility they require to secure their futures in the digital economy.”
